Australia is the only country in the world that is also an entire continent (depending on if you consider Australia to be a continent in its own right or consider it to be part of Australia and Oceania), and it’s therefore no surprise that Australia is a diverse place, filled with different cultures, languages, and even histories. Although Australia’s history goes back hundreds of thousands of years, Europeans didn’t know about it until the late 1700s and when we talk about Australia nowadays we tend—rather unfairly—to refer to period after European discovery and colonialisation.
Its massive size, diversity of climate and plethora of indigenous cultures makes it one of the most interesting countries on the planet and one that can would require a lifetime to properly explore and get to know.
Bearing all that in mind, it’s a bit unfair of me—but also necessary in the interest of time—to focus on one aspect of the country-cum-continent, but it must be said that where windsports are concerned there are few places in the world more enticing than Australia.
Regardless of what you’re into, wind-sport-wise, Australia will have something to offer for you. My top pick would probably be the . Most easily assessed from Cairns, in Australia’s northeast, this is the largest reef system in the world. Unfortunately, thanks to global climate change the reef is dying out at an alarming and very frightening rate. Despite that it’s still one of the most impressive places to go sailing as the tropical waters and the reefs below them (if you’re adventurous enough to jump into the water with scuba gear on) are truly a site to behold.
If sailing isn’t your sport of choice, and you prefer a bit more of the the urban scene consider checking out Australia’s largest city (but not its capital) Sydney. Famous for its beach scene, Bondi Beach is par excellence what Australia has to offer and provides amble opportunity for kiteboarding and windsurfing—in addition to traditional surfing and much else.
What is true is that regardless of what you want to do in regards wind sport, Australia is the place to do it! And so much more to boot!
